Flattened thallus, 5 to 10cm high, showing a characteristic feather-like branching: a long ramulus is opposed to a short ramulus. The main axes are well defined, and disposed on a plan. 
The gametophyte  and the tetrasporophyte are similar. 
Bright red to dark red.
Annual Species, characteristic of infralittoral, exposed stations, often epiphyte of Laminaria hyperborea.

Tallo appiattito, alto tra 5 e 10cm, con una caratteristica ramificazione pennata, in cui un ramulo lungo si trova opposto ad un ramulo corto. Gli assi principali sono ben definiti e disposti su un piano. 
Il gametofito ed il tetrasporofito sono simili. 
Colore tra rosso vivo e rosso scuro.
Specie annuale, caratteristica di stazioni infralittorali ed esposte ai moti ondosi, spesso epifita di Laminaria hyperborea.

Diffuso in Atlantico Nord-orientale (dall' Islanda all' Irlanda).
