	Etymo: lat: pitted; lat: covered of warts Etymo: lat: butterata; lat: coperta di verruche
	. . Thallus composed by cylindrical, branched axes (1 to 4mm in diameter) with rough surface; characteristic dark red verrucous cystocarps; 10 to 25cm. Dark brown to dark red during winter, yellowish brown during summer. The gametophyte and the sporophyte are similar. Perennial species, found in shallow, photophyle, sheltered environments, salt marshes, lagoons and sandy coasts; sometimes free on the bottom. . Talli composti da assi cilindrici ramificati (diametro da 1 a 4mm) con superficie ruvida: caratteristici cistocarpi verrucosi rosso scuro; altezza tra 10 e 25cm. Colore da marrone scuro a rosso scuro durante l'inverno, marrone giallastro d'estate.. Il gametofito e lo sporofito sono simili. Specie perennante, si trova in ambienti superficiali, riparati, bene illuminati, paludi salate, lagune, coste sabbiose; talvolta libera sul fondo. .
